The objective of the contract signed on January 12 is to consolidate the development of Prometheus, in particular by carrying out tests on the Vernon site from 2021. It is funded under the space component of France Relance.
CNES has been the designated operator of this component. The objective of the contract is to develop French skills in liquid propulsion and speed up the Prometheus schedule.
The Prometheus engine is at the heart of the European strategy for preparing future launchers: it is intended to equip the Themis demonstrator with a reusable stage, then the new family of European launchers which will succeed Ariane 6 and Vega-C.
Prometheus became in 2016 a European project within the framework of the FLPP (Future Launcher Preparatory Program) of the European Space Agency (ESA).
