The Demonstration and Science Experiments (DSX) satellite of the Air Force Research Laboratory performed the first space-to-space very low-frequency transmission with JAZA Arase spacecraft.
The mission objective of DSX, launched in June 2020, is to study the interactions of space plasma, radiation belts, and radio waves in near-Earth space. For this transmission, the Japanese spacecraft detected the DSX signal from more than 400 kilometers away. Experiments will continue through May 2021 with Arase as well as Canada’s CASSIOPE satellite.
