NASA is testing AstroRad, StemRad’s space vest radiation protection, aboard the International Space Station. The vest is designed with flexible polyethylene shapes to fit men or women and protect their most vulnerable organs, like the pelvis — where large amounts of bone marrow can absorb radiation –, lungs, breasts, and ovaries.
Israel Space Agency is providing the vest, which cost about $1 million each, as part of its contribution to Artemis mission.
Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus cargo capsule delivered the vests to the space station in November 2019, and StemRad also has distributed limited new radiation suits for doctors and radiologists on Earth.
